Plaque 1

1 Woodroad park and 2 the Congregational church

The park was a hive of activity in the summer months from the 1930s to the turn of the 1970s. It was host to the Cumnock Carnival and the Cycle Rallies. The West of Scotland Cyclists’ Defence Committee ran the annual Cumnock Rally, a two-day event, which was attended by cyclists from all over Scotland in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. This incorporated cycle races and time trials including a slow race. But there was also the swimming gala on the Saturday evening and lots of other events. It had swings and roundabouts, tennis courts and a caravan park. The open-air pool was built in 1935-1936. It was one of the finest open-air swimming pools in the country and was extremely popular in the summer months when many Cumnock youngsters spent the entire school holidays there. It closed around 2002 and was later demolished and replaced by Visions Leisure Centre in Auchinleck Road. The slopes on the north side were coal bings from Stepends pit, now wooded over. There is a network of pleasant paths along the Lugar Water.

The Congregational Church was designed by John Murdoch of Ayr and opened on 18th February 1883. The church is situated at Stepends on the north side of the Lugar or Stepends Bridge.
